High Speed Scanning
The new ScanSnap S500M lets you transform documents into digital format at speeds up to 18 pages per minute simplex, 36 images per minute duplex. Multi-page and multiple sized documents containing colour or black & white, text and graphics on both sides can be processed into PDF or JPEG files at the touch of a button.

The ScanSnap S500M provides a simple user interface that requires no special training in order for you to become productive immediately. The scanner connects to the Mac via a USB port allowing for quick installation and use.

Use ScanSnap Virtually Anywhere
ScanSnap S500M is compatible with both PowerPC G4/G5 and Intel-based Macs. It can be easily connected through a high-speed USB 2.0 port. With its small footprint taking up less space than a notebook computer, ScanSnap is ideal for business professionals who have limited room for another device. There is also a ScanSnap carrying case (PA03951-0651) available, making ScanSnap a portable scanning solution.

Automatic Colour Detection
A single document can include colour and black & white graphics or text. In today's scanning environment the user would have to separate the document, scanning the colour pages separately from the black & white pages or just scan the entire document in colour or black & white. ScanSnap has automatic colour detection recognizing and saving colour pages as colour images and black & white pages as black & white images - even when they are part of the same document! User can scan mixed batches of colour and black & white documents with the comfort of knowing ScanSnap will preserve the look of the original while saving time and valuable storage space.

Auto-Deskew & Auto-Rotation
Documents that are being feed into the scanner with a misalignment of plus or minus 5-degrees, ScanSnap will automatically straighten the page in the resulting image file. Auto-image rotation ensures the pages in your PDF document are oriented as intended: right side up, portrait or landscape.

Auto Blank Page Deletion & Size Detection
ScanSnap automatically senses blank pages and will eliminate them from the scan image: preserving document integrity and saving storage space. Now you can scan a mixed batch of single & double sided documents with no need to delete unwanted blank pages.

ScanSnap Manager v2.0
The latest version of ScanSnap Manager for Mac OS X is fully compatible with Apple computers running Mac OS X 10.2.8 to 10.4 or higher. The unique software driver is a Universal binary, meaning it will run on PowerPC G4/G5 Macs or Intel-based Macs. ScanSnap Manager's settings are one-click accessible from the dock, making the ScanSnap S500M quite easy to use and configure.

Automatic or Custom File Naming
ScanSnap Manager can be used to setup automatic or manual file naming. In automatic file naming mode, ScanSnap names the file as they are created. "Date and time format" (eg. YYYYMMDDhhmmss) and "Prefix + counter format" (eg. image0001) are available. In manual file naming mode, the user is prompted for a file name and location after every batch scan.

Get Productive

Here are some of the more common uses for ScanSnap in Mac OS X and the settings to change for these scanning functions.

Scan to Email
Mac OS X includes an email application called Mail. This application can simply be added to the applications menu in ScanSnap Manager.
To perform scan to email, select “Mail” from the application menu in the ScanSnap Manager before scanning. Then when a scan is initiated by pressing the scan button on the scanner, ScanSnap will attach your scanned image to an open email window, ready to be sent to your desired recipient as shown in the picture below:

Scan Pictures to iPhoto
You can setup ScanSnap Manager to quickly scan multiple pictures or documents into Apple’s iPhoto.

To do this, the following settings need to be changed in ScanSnap Manager.

1. iPhoto will need to be added to the applications menu in ScanSnap Manager and selected.
2. Select the scanning tab and change the following settings:
   a.) Change “Image Quality” to your desired setting. For Photo scanning, it is recommended to change this setting to “Best” or “Excellent”.
   b.) Change ‘Colour Mode” to colour.
   c.) Change “Scanning side” to Simplex scan (Single-sided).
3. Select “File Option” tab and change File Format to JPEG (*.jpg).

Note:
Ensure “Automatic detection” is selected under the “Paper size” tab. It is by default. If scanning multi- size photos in a single batch, ensure you check ” Scan mixed paper size” in the same tab.

Now you can place your pictures in the document feeder and press scan. ScanSnap will automatically scan each photo and import them into iPhoto.

Scan to Acrobat 7.0 Standard and Convert to Text-Searchable PDF
The ScanSnap S500M includes a full version of Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Standard offering you the ability to perform additional operations on PDF images including paper capture to convert images to searchable files, annotations, and document security by adding digital signatures to your images.

Scan to PDF and convert the PDF image file to text-searchable PDF:
If you have already installed Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Professional and ScanSnap Manager v2.0, Acrobat will be listed in ScanSnap Manager’s Application menu.

To scan to Acrobat, select “Acrobat 8.0 Professional from the application menu. Initiate a scan by pressing the scan button on the scanner.

Note: Apple Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger has built-in system wide search capabilities via the Spotlight menu in the upper right corner of the operating system screen. By converting your documents to text searchable PDF, you will have the ability to search for key words within each document when using the Spotlight search engine.
